The short summary report from second ECOSENS Scientific Event held during RICOMET 2024 in June 2024, addressed the public participation in decisions related to SMRs which recently gained a lot of attention in many countries, also in those without major nuclear experience. The ECOSENS project explored in WP1 how citizens perceive, expect, and are concerned about these technologies. This was achieved through focus groups organized in six European states (Belgium, Check republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, UK), although it has proven challenging to recruit participants due to the abstract nature of the technology. Preliminary observations from these focus groups revealed a strong desire for clearer energy policies. Participants noted frequent changes in energy policy, which create confusion about long-term objectives. They expressed a need for public input in these decisions, balanced by expertise from science and research.
Main part of the Scientific Event was a panel with five panellists representing policy makers, researchers and NGOs, which discussed public engagement and participation in the development of SMRs and broader nuclear energy issues. The panel on Small Modular Reactors highlighted both the promise and challenges of advancing SMR technology, especially in light of public participation and stakeholder engagement. Key takeaways emphasized the need for transparent, structured, and inclusive public engagement. Experts agreed that early, honest communication about both benefits and risks is essential for fostering public trust in nuclear developments, particularly as SMRs remain at an experimental stage with various competing designs.
