The panel discussion on “Public participation in decisions related to Small Modular nuclear Reactors (SMRs)”, will be organised on June 10 (16:00-17:40) in Ljubljana (Slovenia), in the framework of the European project ECOSENS (Economic and Social Considerations for the Future of Nuclear Energy in Society, https://ecosens-project.eu/). It will serve as a part of second Scientific Event in ECOSENS which will continue also in Romania linked to the second ECOSENS annual meeting in October 2024.
The panel is part of RICOMET 2024, the annual conference of the European Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities in Ionising Radiation Research (SHARE, https://www.ssh-share.eu/) which will be held on 10th and 11th of June 2024. The conference will take place in Best Western Premier Hotel Slon, www.hotelslon.com, but online participation will be also available. The complete programme is available https://www.ricomet.eu/#programme.
The introduction of SMRs will undoubtedly pose new social and economic challenges in the immediate future. The panel discussion thus aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities and modalities for public participation in technical decision-making on this new technology. Already many questions arise: Are there differences from known nuclear power and siting? In what stage should stakeholders, including the public, be involved? Is it possible to identify specific challenges and opportunities, based on prior experience in the involvement of publics in technical decision-making? The scheduled programme of event can be seen here.
